Course Descriptions

EN100 Basic English – This is a noncredit, basic English course required of all new students whose scores on the English Placement Test indicate that they do not have sufficient background to take EN101.
One semester, three hours

EN101 English Grammar I – This course is a study of English grammar with an emphasis on parts of speech, sentence structure, usage, and punctuation as well as basic writing skills.

EN102 English Grammar II – This course is a study of English grammar with an emphasis upon agreement and usage and complex sentence structures and advanced writing skills.

EN112 Fundamentals of Speech – This course is a study of the basic principles of public speaking with special emphasis on formal presentation and platform techniques.

EN201 English Composition – This course is a study of the rules of formal writing. Students prepare descriptive paragraphs, persuasive and expository narratives, as well as a variety of other compositions including a research paper.

EN209 Children’s Literature – This course is a survey of literature for children at different grade levels with an emphasis on the telling of children’s stories.

EN211 English Literature I – This is a survey course designed to acquaint the student with the major works of English literature.

EN212 English Literature II – This course is a continuing study of the major works of English literature.

EN213 Speaking for Special Occasions – This course is a continuing study in the basic principles and techniques of public speaking with an emphasis on speaking and performing during special events and activities.

EN311 American Literature I – This class is a survey of outstanding American Literature from the Colonial period to the Romantic period.

EN312 American Literature II – This class is a survey of outstanding American Literature from the Age of Realism to the present.

EN313 American Short Story – This class is a survey of major works of American short story writers with an emphasis on theme and development.

EN320 Teacher’s Writing Seminar – This is a course that teaches the mechanics of writing with a review of sentence structure. Assignments include various forms and letters for parent/teacher communications as well as programs for special events.

EN321 Preacher’s Writing Seminar – This is a course that teaches the mechanics of writing with a review of punctuation and sentence structure. Assignments include the writing of a brochure, letters, a church bulletin, a Sunday school lesson, and a narrative. This course is for preachers only.

EN411 World Literature – A survey course designed to acquaint the student with major literary works from around the world.

EN451 Advanced Grammar – This course is an in-depth study of grammar and usage as the fundamental skills of writing.

EN452 Advanced Composition – This is a course with continued practice in writing and revision of papers with special emphasis on unity, coherence, and flow. Assignments include writing narration, description, persuasion, simple forms of creative writing, and a research paper.
